The Project

Expanding legal advocacy to create access to quality mental health services for Alameda County’s foster youth and reduce disproportionate treatment of youth of color.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project:
More than half of foster youth have a need for mental health services, however, many are over-institutionalized and receive no mental health services. Children with troublesome behavior are placed into alternative schools or restrictive group homes and about 25% of foster youth are prescribed psychotropic medications with little oversight. An attorney is needed to confront the legal barriers that prevent foster youth, especially youth of color, from receiving adequate mental health treatment.
The Right Person For This Project:
Jessie is the right person for the project because:
• She is passionate about youth advocacy, having worked with youth in foster care, juvenile justice and private treatment settings as a social worker and therapist.
• She has Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Social Work and has extensive educational and professional experience in mental health.
• She is an Oakland native and is dedicated to creating opportunities for youth in the local community.
