Hannah Herzog

Name of Host Organization: Texas Civil Rights Project
City, State: Houston, Texas
Issue area: Civil Rights/Civil Liberties
Sponsors: The Texas Access to Justice Foundation

The Project

Address and remedy the refusal of Texas officials to identify, accommodate, and treat people with mental health needs in institutions through litigation, outreach, direct services, and advocacy.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project:
More Texans with mental illness are in prison or jail than in mental health treatment. These Texans are more likely to be victims of abuse, sexual assault, discrimination, or even death. Although there are organizations in Texas that provide services to people with disabilities, none focus exclusively on inmate mental health needs. The Texas Civil Rights Project is the only legal organization in TX with a prisoner rights program.
The Right Person For This Project:
Hannah is the right person for the project because:
• Hannah has experience with prisoner’s rights and disability rights litigation
• Hannah has experience with conditions of confinement cases
• Hannah is passionate about making systemic change in the criminal justice system
