2016 Equal Justice Works Fellow, Mariah Hanley

Mariah Hanley

Name of Host Organization: Northwest Justice Project
City, State: Seattle, Washington
Issue area: Veterans' Rights
Sponsors: Microsoft Corporation; Perkins Coie LLP

The Project

Create the Medical-Legal Partnership for Vets at Seattle's VA Medical Center to promote homeless and women veterans' health through direct services, provider training, and systemic advocacy.

The Inspiration

Need Addressed By Project:
Although forty percent of Washington veterans live in the counties surrounding Seattle and the VA Puget Sound healthcare system sees more than eighty thousand veterans annually, existing legal services in Seattle do not collaborate with medical providers to identify and treat veterans whose legal needs are affecting their health such as military sexual trauma and intimate partner violence.
The Right Person For This Project:
Mariah is the right person for the project because:
• She has lived with a chronic illness her entire life and understands how difficult it can be to access necessary treatments, medications, and services
• She is passionate about veterans’ issues and interned with Northwest Justice Project’s Veterans Project for the majority of her law school tenure
• She strongly believes in medical-legal partnerships as a means to increase the health and stability of patients
